Even the most strong, confident, and independent people require a few essentials tools to get through the work day. It’s important to optimize your workspace and make sure you have everything you need to succeed, right at your fingertips. I’ve experience my far share of embarrassment from being unprepared at work, and I want to help you avoid making those same mistakes. So I’m laying out all the work space essentials that you need to make sure you’re ready to conquer the day as a capable young professional.
I’m including recommendations for products that I actually use everyday as part of my work space essentials. I am not sponsored by any brand featured in this post- these are all completely authentic reviews based on my personal experiences. If you have any work space essentials that you love and want to share, let me know in a tweet- I’d love to hear from you.
Small Desktop Fan
This cute little pink fan has a super sleek and simple design, and doesn't take up a ton of space. It connects via USB, so you just have to plug it into your computer and you're good to go. Sometimes I just want a bit of air flow when the room feels stale. Also, even with air conditioning, I still occasionally get a bit too warm in the office. This fan is a convenient and cheap solution.
Supportive Chair Cushion
As a web designer, I spend a majority of the work day hunched over a computer. Of course, my back, shoulders, and tailbone suffer as a result. I found this cushion on Amazon that supports your tailbone and aligns your back. I noticed significantly less back/shoulder/tailbone pain within one day of using this cushion. I imagine this product would also work great on long road trips, since you're seated for several hours at a time.
Lens Wipes
Lens wipes are a desktop essential for several reasons. First of all, it's good to get into the habit of cleaning your computer screen, laptop, keyboard, and cellphone. You would be surprised how much dirt, dust, and oil can accumulate on your electronics. These wipes are specifically made to use on optical surfaces, so they're gentle but effective- and don't leave any streaky residue. If you wear glasses everyday, like myself, then you'll appreciate the simple convenience of being able to clean your glasses throughout the day.
Travel Tumbler
While it's nice to treat yourself to Starbucks every once in a while, it's just so much more affordable to brew your own coffee at home. It can be difficult to commute to work with steaming hot coffee though. Most tumblers and thermoses I've used in the past just end up leaking all over the place, but not my Yeti Rambler. The Yeti brand can be a bit pricey, but their products are heavy duty and reliable. I have the Hot Shot lid for my Yeti Rambler, and it has never once leaked or spilled on me. This combo keeps my coffee hot for so long, It'll still be warm after lunchtime. (I also love all the color choices! I chose the color Seafoam for my Yeti Rambler)
Nice Lip Balm
I recommend picking out a high quality lip balm with a fresh, appealing scent and keeping it at your work desk. If you're interacting with people all day, and/or sitting in an office with dry, stale air, you'll need some serious hydration. You'll want something that works well with a nice clean scent to help you feel refreshed. I really enjoy EOS brand lip care products. The one I'm using right now is Strawberry Sorbet Stick and Sphere Lip Balm for $4.99. I know you're probably thinking "Why would I spend almost $5 on chap stick?" but I promise you there is a HUGE difference between $5 chap stick, and the old, expired kind you find at the bottom of your purse. Give it a try, you won't regret it.
Your Favorite Pens
I dare you to try to remember the last time you actually purchased a package of new ink pens as the store. Pens are like tubes of chap sticks, you tend to just accumulate various stockpiles over time. Eventually, you end up with dozens of cheap, faulty pens that hardly ever work. Now, I dare you to actually buy some decent quality pens that won't run out of ink every time you try to jot down a quick note. If you need a recommendation, I really like the Pentel EnerGel Liquid Gel Pens because they really glide across the paper. It's the little things that keep the day exciting...
